If you are like me and live in Lancaster, Pa than you are probably also excited by what Lancaster County Central Park has to offer.  Conveniently located just south of Lancaster City in the middle of the county (Central Park) it is accessible for everyone in the area.  The park boasts 544 acres making it the largest park in the County.  The Conestoga River creates the northern boundary with entrances off of Chesapeake St and Rt 222 on the south side of the city at Meadia Heights Golf Course.  

So what exactly does the park offer?  An Environmental Center and library, a Garden of Five Senses, Garden Plot Rentals, a Camping Area, Pavilions, Swimming Pool, Skate Park, and a Wedding Venue to name a few!

My wife and I tried, for the first time, renting a garden plot.  This is a great option for the garden enthusiast who lacks the space at home.  There is a high demand for these so getting one can be tricky so get in early.  Most of the lots are 20ft by 20ft or 20ft by 40ft so ample space is provided.  The fees are $22 and $27.50 respectively.  You will need to put up your own fencing to keep out the deer and other unwanted visitors.  The ground is very fertile and constant weeding and watering is required so don't think this is a plant and come back in three months to harvest kind of a deal.  The plots are open for the growing season (April to October) and are open to Lancaster County residents.

Another convenient option is the Millcreek Camping Area, a 10 acre designated "tent only" space.  There are different rates for residents/non residents, group rates (8 or more people), and a maximum of 14 consecutive days allowed at a time.  For $20/night four people can enjoy a spot.  The Millcreek Camping Area is the only place in the park that visitors are allowed to be after dark and this is strictly enforced so plan accordingly!

Two other aspects of the park that are worthy of mention are the Garden of Five Senses and Shuts Environmental Library.  The Garden of Five Senses is a great place to slow down and enjoy the five senses.  The path way leads you to beautiful plants, water, and birds while signs explain how each our your senses works.  The path is stroller and wheelchair friendly although the garden does sit on a hill.  Shuts Environmental Library is a public library that provides environmental resources for the public and educators.  Books, videos, and guides can be borrowed with a Lancaster County Library Card.

For all the park has to offer there seems to always be a place to go that you can find some peace and quiet by yourself.  If you're more adventurous you can go through the parks running/workout trail with a group of friends.  I would strongly recommend that you visit Lancaster County Central Park and utilize this natural gem.  For more info go to http://web.co.lancaster.pa.us/244/Lancaster-County-Central-Park
